In the olden days , medieval England and even Tom Brown's School Days, a faggot or faggots were bundles of sticks tied together, they were used to start fires in fire places. So I expect this pattern is meant to look like stacked or bundles sticks - lines with gaps between them. Faggoting was a popular edging or lacy insert for a bodice or skirt egding when I was little.
Did you use one strand of each wool? Such big needles!! I am using 3.75mm and I yearn for my tiny 2.25mm sock needles!!!
